How To Measure For Incontinence Products

Anyone can suffer from temporary or chronic incontinence. There are protective products and solutions to suit every person.

Today's adult continence care products have marked improvement in design, odour control, and absorbency technology. They can be worn very discreetly without having to make huge wardrobe adjustments.

Some points to remember when buying incontinence products:

  • The correct size should be a nice fit and be secure in the groin area.
  • The leg area should be snug, as a bigger size doesn’t make the product better or more absorbent.
  • If the product is too big for the user, it will make the product uncomfortable, as it will be bulky.
  • If the product is too small, it will make the product uncomfortable as it could cause skin irritation.
  • If the wrong size fixation pant, is chosen this can cause leakage, as the insert pad will not be secure against the user.

Fitting Guide

It is important to get an accurate measurement of the incontinence product that you plan to use and wear. This can ensure that the product or combination of  products that you are using, is comfortable, keeps you dry and protected, and reduces the risk of skin problems.

It is quick and easy to take a quick measurement!

Take a flexible tape measure  and measure the users waist and hip measurements.

  • For the waist, the tape should be placed at the smallest part of the hips (above the bellybutton). The tape measure should be snug round the waist or hips and flat to ensure the correct measurement is taken.
  • Then place the tape around your hips ( widest portion) and take this measurement again, making sure the tape is flat and snug.
  • It’s also  very important to measure your thighs. You may think the waist and hips are sufficient but the thigh measurement, is important for a proper fit around the leg hole. If the adult diaper is too tight on the thighs, it may cause discomfort, and if too loose, leakage can occur.
  • Compare these measurements to your desired brands size chart to find the most appropriate size for you.

Pro Tips !!

  • Check with your Continence Nurse Advisor or Healthcare provider, to ensure you are buying the correct incontinence products,  to ensure you have the right levels of absorbency , and have the correct size and fit.
  • Check each brands size guide and absorbency droplet scale, at the corner of the package of the product, for more information. Each brand has their own guideline.
  • Never buy incontinence products based on your loved one’s pant size. Absorbent underwear and tab briefs are typically worn just below the belly button so the measurements won’t be the same.

These are  just a general guideline for information purposes. Always seek the assessment of your GP, PHN, or Suitable Medical Professional for the correct medical advice for your individual  continence care needs.
